Mimi Phene-McKeller - Owner
Mimi was born on November 4, 1967 in Fontana, CA. At age 5, she became a gymnast in Florence, South Carolina. She moved to Clovis, CA at age 11 and continued to train as a gymnast, as well as competing in cheerleading, diving and track. In August of 1986, Mimi came to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly as a Child Development & Psychology Major. While attending college and competing with the Poly Gymnastics Team, she worked at a few of the gymnastics facilities around the area. That is when she realized her dream of building a great place for children of all ages. Through the tremendous support from the community, she now is the proud owner of such a great place. Central Coast Gymnastics was born on July 2, 1991 and continues to be filled with happy, healthy children learning to reach for their dreams and find confidence in themselves. Mimi believes in the importance of keeping kids healthy, happy and safe. That is why all her staff is First Aid and CPR certified. Mimi also invests in her coaches' continued education by having several coaches attend an annual training conference. The conference is designed to train coaches on new techniques and keep them updated on new information in our industry.
Shannon Merritt - Gym Manager/Optional Girls Coach
Inspired first by Nadia Comaneci's gold medal in the '76 Olympics, Shannon started competing on her Jr. High and High School gymnastics team in Clovis, CA. After her gymnastics career, she began coaching as well as judging at only age 18. Shannon attended Cal Poly and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a concentration in childrens education. As well as attending school, she was the head coach at Atascadero Gymnastics for six years, was blessed with a wonderful husband and two beautiful children. With her husband in the air force, Shannon moved all over the world. In New Mexico, she worked for White Sands Gymnastics, obtained her Masters Degree in Public Administration, and passed her level 10 judging exam. Next, the family was transferred to Guam where she opened her own recreational pre-school gym, continued judging, and got a great tan! The next adventure was a 3-year stay in England. While in England, Shannon worked with students at the Bury Spectrum Gymnastics Club, serving as a coach and choreographer for the optional team, as well as training of other coaches. Now, Shannon has returned to California to work at Central Coast Gymnastics. Her hope for each of our gymnasts is that they gain self confidence and responsibility, learn to work hard and enjoy physical activity, and take pride in themselves for their effort and achievement in this challenging sport.
